The Kota Alliance is proud to present SECOND LIFE, our first-ever solo exhibition,
featuring Harlem-based artist and author Wilhelmina Grant-Cooper.
Grant-Cooper transforms discarded and found objects into powerful mixed-media
assemblages. As a two-time breast cancer survivor, Wilhelmina sees giving abandoned
materials a second life as a reflection of the journey of healing and reinvention.
Launching on the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month as part of our Fall
programming, her work as a breast cancer survivor reflects a deeply personal journey of
healing, survival, and the discovery that endings can become new beginnings.

The AHL Foundation at 2605 Frederick Douglass Boulevard is highlighting the work of non-profit groups benefitting the community, including The Children's Art Carnival, Sisters in Sharqui/Harlem Hafla, and While We Are Still Here among them. Heath Gallery presents Momma Loves You, a group exhibition featuring work by twelve artists whose practices cross portraiture, figurative and abstract work, textile, collage, assemblage, and mixed media.
Some of the artists in the exhibition are mothers, currently or in the past navigating the demands of raising children while continuing to make and share their art publicly. Others are not mothers in the literal sense, but their work is shaped by deep commitments to community, history, justice, self-preservation, and storytelling.
Opening during Black History Month on Valentine’s Day weekend and extending into Women’s History Month, inherent to Momma Loves You are the challenges women artists face in their responsibility to themselves, to family, to community, to history, and to their own creative voices.

Step into the garden and explore the beauty of natural materials as you craft your own Journey Stick—a colorful, textural art piece inspired by the land and your unique creative story. Participants will work with sticks, twigs, yarn, and gathered offerings from nature to build a personal visual narrative, wrapping and assembling materials in ways that spark imagination and flow.
Whether inspired by a walk through the garden, a memory from childhood, or the colors of the season, your finished piece can be proudly displayed on the wall, or to talk with you as a walking stick, as a constant visual reminder of your connection to place

Communion of Treasures Art Exhibition
Dorsey’s Fine Art Gallery is thrilled to present Wilhelmina ‘Obatola’ Grant-Cooper and Alison Kuo in a two-artist exhibition, titled “Communion of Treasures,” on view November 3 through December 8, 2024. The opening reception is on Sunday, November 3 from 3:00-6:00 pm and the artist talk is on Sunday, November 10 from 3:00-6:00 pm. The artists incorporate objects familiar to their communities to form sculptural assemblages. Both teachers and community organizers utilize their artistic prowess to communicate knowledge and protect the vulnerable. Not previously being aware of the other’s practice, the show creates a container for the two to exchange and share their work. Grant-Cooper and Kuo are artists, leaders, and caretakers of their communities. Inspired by their personal experiences, Grant-Cooper founded SISTAAH, Inc. (Survivors Inspiring Sisters Through Art and Advocacy for Health) to educate women on early breast cancer detection after her brushes with the disease, and Kuo co-founded Sisters in Self-Defense with author Ava Chin to offer workshops to Asian femmes on self-preservation in response to the rise in anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tuned into the rhythms of their communities, the artists often host events and deliver classes in local cultural organizations.
